About RAC
-
Q: Is it easier to obtain a diploma by using the RAC process than it is by taking a regular training program?
A: No. You must meet the same requirements as those who have taken a regular training program, i.e. you must possess the same competencies. The only difference lies in the evaluation methods used. The evaluation adapted for adults who are using the RAC process is as rigorous as other methods, but it takes into account the experiential nature of your learning and the fact that you acquired it outside the formal education system. It enables you to demonstrate your abilities in activities or situations with which you are familiar. Thus, you receive recognition for the competencies you fully possess and you will not have to relearn what you already know.
-
Q: I have 15 years’ experience. Will my competencies be recognized automatically?
A: What is evaluated in the recognition of competencies is not how many years’ experience you have, but what you learned during that time. The number of years’ experience you have is therefore not sufficient for the recognition of competencies.
-
Q: Once my competencies has been recognized, do I need to undergo training in the missing competencies to obtain a diploma?
A: That depends on your goals. You could, for example, simply have a few competencies recognized so you can apply for a job. However, if your goal is to obtain a diploma in order to be able to practise a trade ortechnical occupation, all of the competencies in the program of study must be acquired and recognized.
-
Q: Can I ask for the recognition of competencies in a college-level program of studies if I don’t have a secondary school diploma?
A: Each college must comply with the College Education Regulations, as well as with its own admission policies. You should therefore contact the institution in question before taking any steps.
-
Q: Will my diploma or report card have the same value as that of someone who obtains a diploma as a result of regular studies?
A: Yes. The diploma or report card issued will attest to your full proficiency in the competencies required by the programs of study. In addition, the results of the recognition of competencies process will be recorded on the same type of official document, report card or transcript.
-
Q: How long will it take to have my competencies recognized and to acquire any missing training?
A: There is no one answer to this question. Several factors must be taken into account, including your goals (e.g. a few competencies or a diploma), the organization of services at the educational institution you contacted, your motivation and your availability. This is something you should discuss with your recognition of competencies counsellor once you submit your file.
-
Q: Is only my work experience taken into account?
A: No. Your life experience, volunteer work, recreational activities and other personal activities may be taken into account, insofar as you are able to provide evidence that what you learned helped you develop the competencies you want to have recognized in relation to a program of study.
-
Q: Will my employer be informed of my request and my results?
A: Educational institutions that offer recognition of competencies services are required by law to maintain confidentiality. It is up to you, depending on your goals and interests, to decide whether your employer should be made aware, and to act accordingly.
Steps to take
-
Q: How will I be evaluated?
A: Different methods will be suggested for the evaluation of each of the competencies you want to have recognized. For example, a content specialist may, with your permission and that of your employer, come to your workplace to observe you performing a task. In other cases, you might have to do an assignment at home and then meet with a specialist who may ask you questions about the method you used or ask you to make modifications. There are many different evaluation methods, and you will be able to discuss them with the specialists and the counsellor in charge of your file and to agree on the methods that are best suited to your situation.
-
Q: Will I have to go back to school if I need training because I still need to acquire competencies in full or in part to achieve my goal?
A: Determining the training you need and, if applicable, proposing different means of doing so are an integral part of the recognition of competencies. At the end of the process, you will receive a report containing the list of competencies recognized, recommended training and suggestions as to how to go about acquiring the missing competencies.
